The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will kick-start today (Wednesday) its weeklong foundation day celebrations in Lahore, the party’s birthplace and its earlier political bastion.

Acclaimed as the party of the federation and masses, the PPP will be entering into its 50th year under its young Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a political scion of the Bhutto family and the maternal grandson of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

In the process of reorganising the party he inherited from his mother Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal will be meeting workers drawn from all provinces to further the process of completing the organisational structures at the divisional and district levels throughout the country.

PPP in bid to shed ‘friendly opposition’ tag

Interestingly, the festivities planned for almost whole week will be confined within the boundary walls of Bilawal House, a sprawling farm house purportedly offered as gift by a real estate magnate.

The celebrations will start with the main event on Wednesday afternoon when Bilawal is expected to announce the party’s future strategy.

Moreover, he would share with his party cadres an outline of the policy to take on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). This will be followed by interaction with party workers and cultural shows.

To systematically run the programme, the PPP has put in place an organising committee for each region.

Talking to media-persons in Lahore, the PPP Punjab President Qamar Zaman Kaira said party leaders and workers from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir would be participating in this annual event.

He said it was not a public rally but still it would be one of the biggest events in the history of the PPP in which a large number of people would interact and share their vision about the party’s future.

After inaugural session (today), as per the programme schedule, the PPP chairman will conduct interviews with potential candidates for party cadres from Balochistan on Thursday (December 1).

Candidates from the K-P will be interviewed on Friday (December 2), South Punjab on Saturday (December 3), Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir on Sunday (December 4) and Central Punjab on Monday (December 5).

According to the PPP Co-Chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari the event will not only be an occasion of festivities but will also be a moment for stock-taking, reorganisation and soul-searching in a frank and free exchange with the party workers.

“The twin principles namely ‘democracy is our politics’ and ‘all power to the people’ are ingrained in the consciousness of the people and must never be allowed to be erased,” he said in his message circulated through the PPP media wing on the eve of the event.
