A Gift of Two Lakhs

HIS Highness the Maharaja Holkar of Indore has set apart a sum of Rs. 2 lakhs to be utilised for any useful public object desired by his people and has invited suggestions from his subjects as to how best the gift can be used. It appears to us that this form of benefitting the public has not yet been tried by any Indian ruler or administrator and His Highness the Maharaja Holkar should be congratulated on the originality of his idea. The fact that His Highness has given money from out of this privy purse enhances the value of the gift and its purpose tenfold. It is hoped that the people will not only think of the best object of public utility but also have a hand in administering it.
