SALEM: The Southern Railway has extended the Erode-Chennai Egmore day-time train up to December 30 following requests by passengers.
With a view to improve occupancy and to cater to the demands from various quarters, Southern Railway has decided to extend train nos. 06028/06027 Erode-Chennai Egmore-Erode day-time special express train up to December 30. “The train will be operated five days a week, except Thursdays and Saturdays,” said Salem railway division officials.
They further said that the coaches, timings and stoppages will be the same, as advised earlier.
The Southern Railway was operating the day-time train to Chennai Egmore from Erode via Salem and Vridhachalam from September 23. Initially, the train was stated to operate only until October 14, but was further extended up to November 30. Meanwhile, the train users, commuters and others urged the Salem divisional railway manager (DRM) Ravishankar Verma to extend the train. They also submitted petitions to DRM in connection with this.
The DRM forwarded all the petitions to Southern Railway seeking advice to extend the train date. Based on his recommendation, the Southern Railway extended the day time train up to December 30.
Meanwhile, railway officials requested the public to make regular use of the train. “The Southern Railway might stop operation of the train, if the passenger footfall in the train falls considerably. So we request the passengers to make use of the day time train as much as possible,” they said.
They added that the railways will consider further extension or even converting the same into a regular train if there is considerable traffic on the stretch.
