Texas Instruments has expanded its portfolio of complete wireless signal chain solutions for WiMAX applications, introducing three release-to-production radio frequency (RF) transceiver reference designs. These designs support IEEE's 802.16d/e standard RF front end requirements for a variety of wireless infrastructure technologies, including base stations, access points, wireless backhaul, point-to-point microwave, safety band and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD)-based applications.

The complete reference designs include board, design database, schematics and bill of materials to significantly reduce development time. TI is currently displaying these reference boards in its booth number 525 at WiMAX World, October 10-12, at the Boston World Trade Center.

"Axxcelera is one of the world's most experienced wireless solutions providers, and to maintain our leadership, we need to quickly roll out high-performance WiMAX products to meet industry demand," said Tony Masters, senior vice president of Engineering and Operations at Axxcelera. "TI's complete WiMAX reference designs enable us to maintain our high level of performance and reliability and still deliver products to the market as quickly as possible."

The TSW5002 RF reference design, which operates at 2.5 GHz, incorporates TI's TRF11xx chipset and the TSW5003, operating at 3.5 GHz, utilizes the TRF12xx chipset. Both chipsets consist of five chips with fully integrated superheterodyne receivers and transmitters. These complete
reference designs support FDD, Half Frequency Division Duplex (HFDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes with a real interface at a low intermediate frequency (IF) to the data conversion subsystem. TI's flexible RF chipsets are compliant with today's demanding mask requirements, while the receivers feature excellent sensitivity and blocker suppression.

The TSW5005 reference design, operating at 5.6 GHz, incorporates the TRF2432 and TRF2436 heterodyne transceiver two-chip chipset, the most integrated solution available. These chipsets support 4.9-5.9GHz air interface frequency band, and consist of an IF and RF transceiver. The reference design supports TDD mode with complex I/Q interface.

In addition to providing a complete design for the designated frequency, each reference board can be customized for the various transceiving frequencies supported by each chipset. The TSW5002/3/5 can be customized for frequency ranges of 2.3-2.7GHz, 3.3-3.8GHz and 4.9-5.8GHz respectively. Designers can customize the design quickly and easily by substituting on-board filters centered at its band of interest.

All three reference designs will be available via online order entry in Q4 2006 at an evaluation module (EVM) price of $499 for each of the three boards.
