KU to host Indian History Congress
Thiruvananthapuram: The 77th session of the Indian History Congress (IHC), hosted by the Kerala University (KU) in association with the Government of Kerala, will begin at KU campus, Kariavattom on December 28. The three-day congress will be formally inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on December 29 at 12.30pm at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium of Karyavattom campus in the presence of governor P Sathasivam, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, IHC general president K Padayappa and other dignitaries.
The Congress is being organized by the Kerala University after a gap of 58 years.
KU History department head Suresh Jnaneswar said that around three thousand delegates from across the nation and abroad are expected to participate in the Congress. “More than 600 researchers have already registered for presenting papers. After the inaugural session, seven parallel sessions on ancient history, medieval history, contemporary history, historiography etc. will be held in the premises, which will be attended by historians like Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib, Adithya Mukherjee, K N Panikkar and dignitaries like Sitharam Yechury, Nandita Das etc.” he said.
Various historical and cultural exhibitions organized by the Department of Archaeology, Department of Culture and Tourism, Kerala State Archives and Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) will also be held.
Elaborate arrangements have been made to accommodate the delegates. “Hotel rooms have been booked for more than 2,000 delegates. A 17,000 sqft food court will be arranged in the campus. Reception centres will be opened at the railway station, bus stand and airport.
Only members of the Indian History Congress can register as delegates and the registration fee will be Rs 1,200 per head. The delegates should either be history postgraduates or postgraduates in other streams of Social Sciences, who have published research articles or features.
