Sepoy Chandu Babulal Chavan — an Army personnel with the 37 Rashtriya Rifles who had “inadvertently crossed” the Line of Control on September 29 and was captured by Pakistani forces — will be brought back, said Minister of State for Defence, Subhash Bhamre. The Union minister added that all possible efforts were being made at all levels of the government.

Bhamre was speaking on the sidelines of the Passing Out Parade of the 131st course of the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla in Pune.

Chavan, 22, hails from Borvihir village in Dhule district.

When asked about the status of talks on the issue, Bhamre said, “He hails from my constituency. We are in constant touch with his family. Talks are on at the level of the Director General of Military Operations, and also through the Ministry of External Affairs and diplomatic channels. One positive thing is that they have accepted that Chandu Chavan is with them. They will have to send back Chavan some day… the question is when.” He added, “The neighbour is hostile. We are sure that Chavan will be back when the situation comes back to normal. The efforts are on at all levels.”

When asked about the mutilation of a soldier’s body along the Line of Control in Machhil sector of Kupwara district, Bhamre said, “There is continuous dialogue… simultaneously, diplomatic pressure is maintained with the help of other friendly countries. We understand the feelings of the family members of the soldier.”
