Udupi schools to help spread awareness on HIV
Udupi: T Venkatesh, Udupi deputy commissioner said here on Monday that the district administration would organize rallies and Yakshagana performances about HIV awareness in different schools to observe World AIDS Day on December 1. This year’s theme is ‘Join hands to fight against HIV’.
The DC, after analyzing the disease in the district, said, "Creating awareness through children and youth will create a positive impact.
MSM (men who have sex with men), FSW (female sex worker), drug users, transgender and migrants are high-risk persons and our efforts will focus on them.”
He added, “HIV affected children were given financial aid up to Rs 700 per month. In the district, 50% of the population affected with HIV were given bus passes for private buses. Under the DC Special Fund, 249 HIV affected children were given nutritous food, hygiene kits and housing. Udupi is considered a model by other districts."
The ART centres in the district are giving free treatment and medicines to HIV patients.
There are two centres in Udupi - one in the district hospital, Udupi and the other at General Hospital, Kundapur.
From 2008 till October 2016, pre-ART registration at Udupi was 3,968 members and there were 727 deaths reported.
In Kundapur, the registration was 957 and total number of deaths were 21.
As per the blood safety indicator, in 2014-15, the number of unit tested positive was 10.
In 2015 -16, 18 were positive and in April -September 2016, 7 positive units were detected.
As per SIM ICTC data from April-October 2016 and as on November 15, 2016 data received by the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS), no district in Karnataka reached the green line.
In Udupi, 20,208 took the gonorrhea test also known as GC test of which 210 (male 133, female77) tested positive while 10,886 took the absolute neutrophil count (ANC). Six of them tested positive for ANC.
