The 2-day International Conference BIOCON-2016 on the topic “Emerging Trends in Biomedical Research in the New Millennium” began at the Government Medical College (GMC) here today.The conference being organized by the Department of Biochemistry in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences was inaugurated by the Minister for Health & Medical Education, Bali Bhagat by lighting the traditional lamp in presence of MLA Sat Sharma, Secretary, Health & Medical Education, Dr Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal GMC, Dr. Zahid Gillani and several faculty members.Several prominent scientists and doctors from across the country and abroad including, Dr. S.K. Das, Dr. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Dr. V.K. Kutala, Dr. Rajinder Prasad, Dr. Dinesh Puri, Dr. Eliza Chakraborty, Dr. Abbas Ali Mahdi, Dr. Nursing Verma, Dr. R.K. Garg, Dr. Sabiha Majid, Dr. Bashir Ahmed Ganai, Dr. Mridula Mahajan and  Dr. Neelima Verma are participating in the conference and will deliver lectures on the subject and enlighten the audience about the latest developments in the field of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and emerging challenges.The conference will provide a golden opportunity to the faculty, Post-Graduate, Under-Graduate students of GMC, besides a large number of participants from all neighboring states to learn the advancements in the field of diagnosis, treatments and research for various diseases. 

The young researchers will present their papers and discuss their work.Special Guest lectures will be delivered by Dr JFG Joski Bunders, Director, Biology & Society, Head of Department, VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands, Dr Hari S. Sharma (Founder President) Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences, University Medical Center De Boelelaan Amsterdam the Netherlands, Dr. Virendra Misra, Sr. Cardiologist, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Abu Dhabi, UAE and Dr. Shyam S Chauhan, Prof & Head, Department of Biochemistry AIIMS on different topics.Speaking on the occasion, the Health Minister said that such events provide opportunities to the young doctors to learn about the new trends and help them in career progression. He hoped that the event will prove quite useful and offer a platform to the doctors and researchers to share their experiences on the subject. He welcomed the guests from various parts of the globe to the city of temples on behalf of the Government and greeted the organizers for their laudable efforts for holding this mega event. He stressed the need for organizing such conferences on varied topics frequently to update the doctors on advancements in medical science.He suggested the doctors and clinicians to work together to develop cheaper and effective diagnostic techniques, medicines, tests for the serious diseases like Cancer, Diabetes, and Tuberculosis which are affordable for the poor patients, especially in the rural areas. He stressed the need for a close synergy between the doctors, scientists and clinicians to improve the diagnostic techniques for the overall betterment of the patient care.

Dr. Bhandari congratulated the organizers for holding this special event and maintained that the young doctors will make optimum use of the brainstorming conference and learn many new things from the experts. He said that objective of organizing such events is to update the doctors, especially the young ones about the emerging challenges and techniques which help them in providing succor to the patients.Dr. A.S. Bhatia, Head of the Department, Biochemistry, GMC, who is also organizing Secretary of the BIOCON-2016, in his welcome address said that the main objective of the conference is to bring together research scientists and clinicians on a common platform to foster in-depth discussion among them for better understanding and improving therapeutic and diagnostic technology for various diseases.He expressed his gratitude to the participants, especially from abroad and other States for joining the event which will definitely help the junior doctors to learn about new methods and techniques in Biochemical research.MLA Sat Sharma and Principal GMC, Dr. Zahid Gillani also addressed the gathering and wished the organizers all success for the conference.The Minister also gave away mementoes to the guests on the occasion.Several retired and in-service HoDs, faculty members, members of the managing committee and students were also present on the occasion.
