Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan says he is “delighted” to sign Danny Morrissey as the striker has left Cork City in search of regular first-team football.

The 22-year-old has been with City since joining as a 16-year-old in 2010 but has struggled this season to break into John Caulfield’s side, who won this year's FAI Cup and finished second in the league.

Morrissey played just a couple of league games was left out of the match-day squad for the dramatic extra-time cup final victory over Dundalk at the Aviva earlier this month.

Harps boss Horgan, however, believes the Cork man will add quality to the squad.

“We are delighted to get Danny on board for next season,” Horgan said.

“I have known Danny a number of years now and always had a high opinion of him. I think he will fit in great with us, both with his ability and his work rate.

“The move should be of benefit from the club's point of view as well as for Danny himself who needs to play consistently.”

The forward  enjoyed an excellent 2011/12 campaign for the club’s league and cup-winning Under 19′s side, earning himself a call-up to the Ireland Under-19 squad and enjoyed his best year at Turner’s Cross in 2013 amid rumours on interest cross-channel.

"My job will be to score goals and help the team to get as many points as possible"

Injuries have also hampered his progress and Morrissey is keen to get regular first-team football in Donegal.

“The boys were going very well from early in the season so it was very hard to get into the team,” he said.

“Things were going well in the league and Europe and that made it very difficult for me. And that was one of the deciding factors in that Ollie is going to give me the chance of regular team football at Finn Harps.

“I want to prove myself and the only way you can do that is by playing more games. My job will be to score goals and help the team to get as many points as possible.”

Elsewhere, central defender David Webster has signed a new contract at Shamrock Rovers for the 2017 season.

Rovers’ head coach Stephen Bradley said: “I am delighted that David has signed a new contract at the club, he sees his future here and so do we.

"I am aware that David had other offers to consider, which does not surprise me as he is a very good footballer and an excellent defender.

"He is the right age for us, I know that David has more in him and has more to give Shamrock Rovers and we will see that next season.

"He is versatile and can play in a number of positions. He played number six for us last season and did well. David is another quality addition to our 2017 squad.”
