Politics behind 53% brothel evictions: Study
Political motivations act behind more than half the brothel evictions in Bangladesh, a study by Manusher Jonno Foundation said today.
While politics lie behind 53 percent of the brothels’ eviction, about 70 percent evicted sex workers believe they do not get government assistance during eviction.
The findings were presented by ASM Amanulla, professor of the sociology department at Dhaka University, in a seminar organised by the foundation in the capital’s CIRDAP auditorium.
Also, without rehabilitation, 90% of the evicted sex workers continue prostitution in other places such as parks and open spaces, the study found out.
The study was conducted over the first half of 2016 in three evicted brothels – Tangail-Madaripur and Khulna – and interviewed 180 evicted sex workers, conducted three focus group discussions, one consultative meeting and analysed five case studies.
