Volkswagen Polo TSI spied testing

150 hp Volkswagen Polo 180 TSI spied testing in India

About a fortnight ago, spy images of a Volkswagen Polo test mule surfaced on the web suggesting an update for the hatchback was due soon. The test-mule sported the ‘GT’ and ‘TDI’ badges that suggested that the company is working on equipping the model with the updated 1.5-litre diesel motor that made its debut on the Ameo.

Now, yet another unit of the Polo with temporary registration plates has been spotted during a public road test. What’s new this time though is a new petrol engine that is liekly to be introduced in India soon. As seen in these spy images, the uncamouflaged Polo features a TSI badging suggesting that a new petrol motor for the Polo is on its way. This engine, as another badging on the right side of the tailgate suggests, is the ‘180 TSI’ engine.

It is said that below the hood of this test-mule is a 1.4-litre four cylinder TSI engine that produces a power output of 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, as seen on international spec models. This engine, if launched with the Polo in India, could come mated to a seven speed DSG transmission while a manual transmission could also be offered, both sending power to the front wheels. Once launched in India, the Polo 180 TSI would be positioned above the Polo GT TSI and below the Polo GTI. Rivals to the Polo 180 TSI would include the likes of the 147 PS Fiat Punto Abarth.
