City aims to minimize currency at all government establishments.
CHANDIGARH: From December 10, you won't be able to use currency at any of the e-sampark centres of the city. The use of currency will be drastically reduced in government-to-citizens, business-to-citizens and other administrative establishments too. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of Chandigarh administration on Monday.
The administration had called representatives of most of the public and private sector banks and regional head of the Reserve Bank of India for a meeting and sought suggestions.
Besides, a meeting of the senior officers of the Chandigarh administration with the officers of the Central government and NITI Aayog, New Delhi, was also held through video-conferencing, where modalities were discussed to make Chandigarh a cashless city in a short time.
"We have set the deadline of December 10 and all the departments concerned of the administration have been asked to prepare themselves. Since the role of banks is most crucial, we have asked them to keep themselves ready, so that target can be achieved without delay or anomaly. The Prime Minister has kept December-end as the deadline to make Goa cashless, but we want to take the lead," said a senior UT officer.
In Monday's meeting, banks were asked to install POS (point of sale) machines at all government establishments. UT administrator VP Singh Badnore had already announced to hold interactions with college and school principals to make young generation aware about the benefits of a cashless society.
