Senior tournament committee to decide on MCA, TNCA protests

There seems to be no end to the controversy over rescheduling of a couple of Ranji games by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The protests by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) will now be referred to the senior tournament committee.

Two points are being made to the decision. In case of any weather intervention, the points have to be split and a rematch can never be ordered. The other point that is being put forth is that the decision was taken immediately after the postponement and rescheduling decision was not an afterthought.

But Mumbai and Tamil Nadu, who occupy the first and second positions in the Group A table, contend that Bengal and Gujarat have an unfair advantage of playing after every other team in the group has finished its league matches.

It is also being said that the technical committee has decided on rescheduling but an official of one of the protesting associations says that the decisions should always be by the senior tournament committee, not by the technical panel.

The tournament committee is headed by Gautam Roy, a BCCI vicepresident from East Zone. The other members of the committee are Haryana, Goa, Orissa, Baroda and Uttar Pradesh. Board secretary Ajay Shirke is the convenor of the panel.

The BCCI scheduled the Bengal-Gujarat of Group in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad-Tripura game of Group C in Kolkata. Both games will be played from December 15 to 18. These games were called off after two days of inaction due to smog in New Delhi earlier this month.

SGM on December 2

A formal decision on the protests could be taken on December 2 when the BCCI will hold a Special General Meeting (SGM). The SGM, expected to be held in New Delhi, will discuss the third status report of the Lodha Committee, which has sought the removal of all the ‘ineligible’ officebearers and appointment of GK Pillai as an observer.

The BCCI has not yet sent out notices outlining the agenda of the SGM but the one point business of the meeting is likely to be discussion on the status report. The Supreme Court will hear the case on December 5.
