NASHIK: As a precautionary measure before the civic elections in February, the city police are planning to revise their list of criminals to make sure that no law and order problems are created.
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Dattatray Karale said, “There are many criminals who are no longer active. Hence, we have decided to remove their names from the list and include the names of new criminals. All police stations in the city have been instructed to revise the data of active criminals in their jurisdictions so that it will be easier to take action against them.”
Ahead of the civic elections, the police are proposing externment of criminals involved in body offences.
Quite a few criminals will be booked under other stringent provisions.
The Nashik police have a list of 3,500 criminals involved in offences like burglaries, chain snatchings, vehicle theft and body offences like causing hurt and committing or preparing for dacoity. Most of them live in the jurisdiction of the Panchavati police station, followed by Sarkarwada and Ambad.
A senior police official said the record of criminals, which includes their name, address and other details, helps in monitoring their activities. The criminals are visited regularly through different drives to check what their activities are, who they meet and how they make their livelihood.
