GURGAON: There is growing anger over the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl, whose body was found in a dump on Sohna Road last Saturday morning. Residents of housing societies near Golf Course Extension Road — close to that area — on Friday took to social media and mobilised support for the bereaved family and bring her rapist and killer to justice.
Social media groups were flooded with posts trying to whip up support for the girl’s family, in terms of legal and financial help, and counselling.
“When the girl was kidnapped, the police did not file a missing person’s report. Maybe the girl would have been alive if police had acted on time. We’re hearing different accounts from the media. We now want to verify the facts ourselves and see if the police acted the way they should,” said Gowda Lakshmi, a resident of Palm Drive, opposite Vatika City.
She added that if need be, they will gather more people and put pressure on the police commissioner so that the cops carry out a thorough probe.
“Every time something like this happens, people wake up after the verdict is out and take out a candle-light march. I feel it would be more beneficial if we act now, while the probe is on, and help the family get justice, so that this doesn’t end up as another Aarushi,” said Shruti Mittal, the administrator of Facebook group Gurgaon Connect, who has been cross-posting on various social media platforms to mobilise support.
Her posts have gone viral on Facebook community groups, including Gurgaon Helpline and Gurgaon Connect. People who have come out in support of the bereaved family, plan to meet them on Tuesday to extend their support.
“We hope to help the parents, who are right now in a miserable state. The issue has struck a chord with all of us, because it highlights the lacunae in laws, as well as the agencies responsible for their implementation. We’ve all suffered due to their negligence, and we hope we can together do better in yet another case of negligence,” said Safaraz Khan, a city-based entrepreneur.
