Police in Fairfax County said a woman was fatally stabbed Monday in the Mount Vernon area by her husband.

The incident occurred before dawn in the 8400 block of Diablo Court near Richmond Highway. Police said they found a woman with “trauma to the upper body.” She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified as 35-year-old Yesenia Membrano-Diaz. Police initially said the victim was 37.

Authorities also said a resident reported to them that she heard screaming outside and "then saw a woman outside on the ground."

When officers arrived, they found the woman, who was unresponsive. A K-9 team, a helicopter and officers on the ground searched for the suspect.

The suspect was later found and identified as Ricardo Molina-Martinez. He is said to be in his late 40s and is the victim’s husband, according to police.

The D.C. region has had more than 260 homicides this year, according to data tracked by The Washington Post. Forty-three of those have been in Northern Virginia, including 13 in Fairfax County.
