Simarjit Singh Bains.
Though they took lead in severing ties with the Awaaz-e-Punjab to create an alliance with the AAP and giving the impression that they left Navjot Sidhu without any options but to join the Congress, the Bains brothers -Simarjit and Balwinder Singh, say they are disheartened by the former cricketer and Pargat Singh going to opposite camp.
The two Inde pendent MLAs from Ludhiana say that they had persisted with the former BJP MP to join hands with AAP, but Sidhu was not forthcoming.
They, however, aver that they will always respect Sidhu whom they find an honest politician. In a freewheeling interview with the TOI, Balwinder Singh Bains who represented Ludhiana South and Simarjit Singh Bains who was legislator from Atam Nagar in Ludhiana mentioned that despite his clean track record, Sidhu will not be able to clean up the rut in the Congress, “A party which is deeply entrenched in corruption and as bad as the SAD.“
Did you speak to Navjot Sidhu after hearing that he, his wife and Pargat Singh were joining Congress?
Yes, we spoke and still are in touch. He is like an elder brother to me and will always remain so. I have given him my best wishes and told him as and when he needs me personally, I will always be happy to do anything for him.
But now you have ties with the AAP, which is a bitter rival of the Congress, will there not be a confrontation once Sidhu joins the Congress or campaigns while taking on the AAP?
Despite having come to the opposite sides, we have no personal differences. Our objective is to help people of Punjab get rid of corrupt politicians and misrule. Sidhu ji also has similar objective but given the deep rooted corruption in the Congress, he will not be able to do anything despite his all good in tentions. But our good wishes are always with him and we have a great respect for him which will always be there. Awaaz-e-Punjab was formed with much fanfare barely two months ago. Does it not hit the credibility of its members who are now joining the political parties which are pitted against each other? It does leave you with a sense of regret. But our purpose is to make Punjab corruption free and help people get rid of misrule. Even before the press conference where our tie up was to be announced with the AAP, I spoke to Sidhu and Pargat over phone asking them to come along. I also said if he was willing we would postpone the press conference. But I think by then he had made up his mind and he was in touch with the Congress high command.

Were you ever approached to join the Congress?
We have also been approached but we are very clear that we would never join a party which is a carbon copy of SAD. For us joining the Congress is just like “dharam parivartan“ (change of reli gion), which we would never do.
But for Sidhuji all I have to say is he has taken a persona decision and we respect that.
