Two from Mumbai held with 1.5kg gold in Valsad

SURAT: Police detained two residents of Mumbai when they were found carrying 1.5kg of gold worth Rs 42 lakh in Sarigam GIDC area of Valsad district on Saturday.
Nirmal Badrinath Sharma, 38, a businessman and resident of Boiser in Palghar near Mumbai, and Shrenik Hasmukh Mehta of Goregaon West in Mumbai, were coming to Gujarat to sell the gold to a person in exchange for scrapped notes.
Police estimated the value of the 15 seized gold biscuits to be around Rs 42 lakh.
Three mobile phones worth Rs17,000 and a car worth Rs 5 lakh belonging to them have also been seized, police said, adding that they are trying to identify the person to whom the accused had come to sell the gold biscuits.
Police kept watch in Sarigam GIDC about suspicious movements of some persons as they had received in formation that a few people were to come from Mumbai with gold consignment. Police kept a dummy buyer ready and he got in touch with Sharma and Mehta when they arrived at Sarigam.
Police identified the two suspects when they were holding discussions with the dummy buyer. Police checked the suspects' car and found 15 gold biscuits each weighing 100 grams with them. The duo was unable to produce any documents related to the gold.
“Two persons were detained for carrying gold in huge quantity without any documents. They are being questioned and asked to produce the documents for the bullion. Action will be taken against the duo if they fail to produce documents to us,“ said Premvir Singh, superintendent of police, Valsad.
