Salem: The divisional railway manager (DRM) Harishankar Verma inspected the Salem-Vridhachalam railway stretch, as part of the electrification operation which is to be carried out on the stretch between Karur-Dindigul. He inspected the stretch in his special inspection bogie on Saturday.
Earlier he told media persons in Attur in Salem, that the inspection, of the Salem-Vridhachalam stretch, was carried out in two phases- Salem to Attur and Attur to Vridhachalam.
“I have inspected the stretch to check the under protection point of view,” he said.
The DRM also inspected railway stations across the stretch to check provision of basic amenities. “We have taken steps to provide as many amenities as possible to all passengers, especially to the differently-abled,” Harishankar Verma said.
Meanwhile, rail passengers, commuters and member of various associations submitted their petitions to the DRM, most seeking continuation of the day train to Chennai from Erode via Vridhachalam.
The Southern Railway had recently operated day time train to Chennai Egmore via Salem and Vridhachalam stretch from Erode. “Due to demonetisation, the number of passengers using that train has reduced considerably. But it will fetch a good response in the future,” said S Sivakumar, president of Tourist Guide Association, based in Attur.
