NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police sub-inspector and three others were arrested for duping a businessman of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of changing the demonetised Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes into new ones.
The businessman, Saifuddin, had reached Delhi from Supol, Germany, with Rs 18 lakh to pay his creditors a day before the Prime Minister declared the demonetisation. However, the creditors refused to take the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.
Saifuddin asked his relative, Amantollah, to exchange the notes.
Amantollah then approached his neighbour, Sailender, who promised to get notes exchanged by his sister, a bank manager.
Sailender asked Saifuddin to meet him outside Tilak Nagar Metro station with the money where he introduced him to a woman and another person. “He told me the notes would be exchanged by evening, but he did not return,” said Saifuddin.
The next day, Sailender asked Saifuddin to meet him outside Connaught Place police station where he handed over Rs 3 lakh. He claimed that the rest of the money was paid as 200% penalty by the bank. However, when asked for proof, Sailender promised to get in touch later. Sailender then started avoiding Saifuddin and Amanatollah’s calls after which they lodged a complaint at Tilak Nagar police station.
Probe revealed that Sailender went to Mayur Vihar police station and distributed the money among three youths — Ranvijay, Ankur and Rohit — who gave it to sub-inspector Sudhir Rathi for exchanging it. On questioning, the three youths said that Rathi gave a part of the money to them and left with the rest. The cop was traced to Kalyanpuri police station and arrested.
Sailender and the woman have been detained, but a case will be registered against them once their culpability is established, said a senior police officer. Some cash has been recovered from them. A cheating case has been registered against Rathi and the three youths, who were produced before a court on Saturday and sent to judicial custody.
