The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee(HSGMC) has requested President Pranab Mukherjee to intervene for speedy completion of the SYL canal project and impose Governor’s rule in Punjab.

In a letter sent to the President, the HSGMC requested that the SYL canal was very important for farmers of Haryana and the Supreme Court had given its verdict in the favour of Haryana. But Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and other political leaders have made it a political issue to gain benefits in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Talking to The Tribune, HSGMC chief Jagdish Singh Jhinda said: “The Prime Minister had an opportunity to resolve the issue during his recent Punjab visit but he didn’t do that. The BJP government at the Centre and the SAD-BJP government in Punjab have been trying to gain the maximum out of this situation but it may disturb the law and order situation in both states. They have also been refusing to accept the SC verdict which is a sheer insult of the Supreme Court.”

“The committee has appealed the President to impose Governor’s rule in Punjab and issue directions to start constructing the SYL canal before the Assembly elections”, he added.

The HSGMC has also mentioned about the case pending in the Supreme Court regarding the formation of the HSGMC.

The committee earlier threatened to take control over all gurdwaras in the state if Punjab failed to accept the Supreme Court verdict on the SYL canal.
