Haryana’s sportswomen are headstrong and proud of their roots: Chak De!’s Komal Chautala

Actress Chitrashi Rawat was in Gurgaon on Sunday evening as part of a play, and we got talking about the character she is still the most famous for – that of Komal Chautala from the film 'Chak De! India'. She told us, “Though people realise immediately that I played Komal, the moment they get to know that I am that Haryanvi girl from 'Chak De!', they start telling me about their tales from their roots from Haryana.I politely tell them that I am not Haryanvi, but because of the film, I understand the language well. I think because of my understanding of the language, I can play a Haryanvi character easily.”
She had been a professional hockey player, and played with many Haryanvi girls in her sporting days. She said, “Haryana ke doodh mein aisa kya hai? Yahan sab itne mentally and physically strong hote hain. The girls I met were so proud of their roots. Just like my character, they are so headstrong and one has to admire that trait.”

Chitrashi also mentioned that initially, the ‘rudeness’ of the Haryanvi language had struck her as “weird”. She added, “I come from Dehradun where everyone says ‘aap’ and ‘hum,’ and I thought, aise daant ke baat kaun karta hai? But I later realized that it is just the way they talk, but they mean only well.”
When we told her that many players in the Indian women’s hockey team want a sequel of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, she replied, “Chak De!' is a masterpiece kind of film. If you try to make it again, it will get ruined and its importance will be lost.” She also had plans to catch up with another Chak De! girl, Shubhi Mehta, who is a Gurgaon resident.
