4 Army commandos injured in Manipur rebel attack

People’s Liberation of Army (PLA) rebels on Saturday triggered IED explosions targeting a security patrolling team in the Sajik Tampak area of Manipur’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar, injuring at least four commandos of the Army’s Special Para force.

IMPHAL: People’s Liberation of Army (PLA) rebels on Saturday triggered IED explosions targeting a security patrolling team in the Sajik Tampak area of Manipur’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar, injuring at least four commandos of the Army’s Special Para force.
The injured, identified as NA Rakesh Thakur, Vikram Salunke, W Lowong and Pankaj Singh, were immediately airlifted to the military hospital at Lemakhong near Imphal.
The condition of Lowong is critical, a source said.
A joint team of 21 Para and Assam Rifles were patrolling a remote jungle close to a border pillar of the two countries when five IEDs, planted by the rebels on a pavement, went off almost simultaneously around 9.30 am, police said.
A joint statement issued by Ulfa(I) and Corcom (Coordination Committee) of Manipur said the attack was carried out by the ‘252 battalion’ of PLA as part of Operation Barak, which was jointly launched by Ulfa(I) and Corcom. They claimed five soldiers were injured. The statement was signed by Ulfa(I) chief Paresh Baruah and chairman of joint military commission of Corcom MM Ngouba.
The Corcom comprises PLA, UNLF, Prepak and Prepak (Progressive). Ulfa (I) is a constituent of the United National Liberation Front of Western Southeast Asia (UNLFW). Last week, the group ambushed a Kumaon Regiment convoy at Pengeri in Tinsukia district of Assam, killing three jawans and injuring four others.
Security has been beefed up along the porous India-Myanmar border after the incident. The Army and the Assam Rifles could not be contacted for comments. cident.
On the other hand, suspected rebels placed a grenade at the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East on Saturday morning, spreading panic among hospital staff and patients. Bomb experts rushed to the spot and defused the explosive.
