The big draw in Croatia is the Dalmatian Islands that lie between Dubrovnik and Split. There are plenty of cruises that can take you through these islands, mostly on a one-week basis although you can also catch ferries to take in just one or two of the islands at your own pace. This would fit into your itinerary and in April you're well ahead of the crowds.

Montenegro is a very different proposition and if you're feeling intrepid, go for it. The big attraction is Kotor, set deep within the fiord-like fastness of its bay.

Within Kotor's city walls is a knot of dark passages that open to piazzas furnished with churches and cafe tables scatted across the cobblestones.

Montenegro's coastline is a miraculous strip of beaches interspersed with the occasional jewel such as the walled, sea-girt city of Budva, which invites comparisons with Dubrovnik.

Montenegro is either mountains or water. Its coastline rises swiftly into a rocky, craggy hinterland of steep mountains and valleys furnished with lakes and swift flowing rivers.

Since the country is pocket-sized the best plan is to base yourself somewhere on the coast where most of the accommodation is located and make day forays inland.

Among the treasures is Lake Skadar, the largest freshwater lake in south-eastern Europe, with a handful of medieval monasteries set on its tiny islands.

However, to make the most of Montenegro you would need to get behind the wheel.
