Following a counsel representing the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) claiming that they are unable to take steps to manage the landfill sites in the city, the Delhi High Court had slammed the counsel questioning the need of the civic agencies if they fail to manage the sites.
Demanding explaination on the mismanagement and poor maintenance of the landfill sites a bench of Justice from the Delhi High Court had summoned the commissioner of the three MCDs and the member secretary of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and had asked them to appear before court on December 1.
The court directions came during the hearing of a PIL filed to the bench, last year, regarding issues relating air pollution in the city. Emissions from landfill sites and fires at garbage dumpshad been cited as some of the major reason for the increasing pollution the national capital.
Following the DPCC counsel Sanjiv Ralli’s claim that the existing landfill sites had not been approved by the DPCC, the bench of justice had further slammed the councel.
In a statement quoted in The Indian Express, Sanjiv Ralli said,”The sites are non-scientific, not being maintained under rules so there is no consent by the DPCC and that it was beyond anyone’s capacity to make the sites compliant with the rules.”
