Rs 10 lakh old notes seized from trader’s car near Bhiwadi

The police on Saturday seized old currency notes worth Rs 10 lakh from the car of a trader during checking near Bhiwadi highway in Alwar district.

ALWAR: The police on Saturday seized old currency notes worth Rs 10 lakh from the car of a trader during checking near Bhiwadi highway in Alwar district.
According to additional SP Siddhant Sharma, the incident came to light when police were carrying out checking on the highway near Bhiwadi when they intercepted one car. The police found a bag filled with cash from his car. The man has been identified as Amit a Bhiwadi-based trader.
Alwar additional SP Siddanth Sharma said that Amit told police during the primary interrogation that he was coming from Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
“The cops asked him several questions about the money but he couldn’t give us any reasonable response as to where he was taking the money for, after that we seized the amount under section 102 of the Indian Penal Code,” he added.
The police said that there were two people who were driving the car and probe has been conducted by the cops to look into the matter. Meanwhile, the police have said that they have informed the sleuths of the income tax department to find out if the money was unaccounted cash or not.
“These matters are under the jurisdiction of the income tax department, a team will land in the city soon to question Amit about the cash. This is second such incident where we have recovered cash from during a highway check, police said.
Meanwhile, the cops believe that Amit was taking the money to convert it into new currency notes. “Ever since the announcement of demonetization, the people are scrambling to get their unaccounted money converted into new currency notes by several means. We had been keeping a tight vigil on such people and all vehicles trying to cross the state are being checked,” a senior official said.
Police added that cash has been seized by the police and further investigation will be conducted by the income tax department to establish the source of the money and how it was earned.
