COIMBATORE: A 26-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging at her residence at Ganapathipudur in the city on Thursday night after a tiff with her drunkard husband. The city police on Friday arrested the husband and charged him with abetment of suicide.
Suji Lakshmi, 26, a native of Kerala, married a man eight years ago and got separated from him over some issues. She then married Anandakumar, 36, of Ganapathipudur, and the couple has two daughters.

While Suji was working at a dental clinic at Ganapathy, Anandakumar is working at a motor pump manufacturing unit. The Saravanampatti police said Anandakumar became a drunkard and went to work once in a week. This led to arguments between the couple often.
On Thursday night, a quarrel broke out between the couple and Suji threatened to commit suicide. Seeing no reaction from Anandakumar, Suji went to the kitchen and hanged herself. The neighbours rushed to the house and took her to a private hospital. Later, Suji was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared her brought dead. Postmortem was conducted on Friday and the body was handed over to the relatives in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Saravanampatti police have registered a case against Anandakumar under sections 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. Police arrested and remanded him in judicial custody.
