Whittier Christian (Calif.) football player dies after freak accident

Ethan Hawks, a junior football player at Whittier Christian (La Habra, Calif.), has died.

The school announced the news on its Facebook page.

Hawks, 17, had been in an induced coma since a Nov. 19 car accident. He and his mother were traveling on the 57 Freeway when a metal object crashed their the windshield, according to a GoFundMe page posted after the accident. The piece of metal was roughly 7 to 10 pounds.

His carotid artery was cut and he suffered extensive damage to his jaw and cheekbone, the page said. His mother attempted to stop the bleeding and drove immediately to the hospital.

He had a bad reaction to medication he was given Wednesday night and was stabilized after going into septic shock.

The overwhelming response of support for the Hawks family over the last few days is a testament to just how much Ethan was loved by his family and friends and how his story touched so many lives,” Whittier Christian Head of School Carl Martinez wrote in the post.

Hawks was nicknamed “Boom Stick” and was known for his toughness. He suffered a season-ending compound leg fracture during a game last season and most expected that to end his football career, according to the Orange County Register. Instead, he was back doing drills in the spring.

In a Twitter post Thursday with the headline  “Thank you Boom Stick,” Whittier Christian quarterback Quinn Commans wrote, “Ethan, you were the craziest and happiest kid I’ve ever met and yet still couldn’t catch a break. It’s way too soon to see you go, but I wouldn’t want anyone else creating all the crazy memories, always asking about my day, reminding me how bad I was at football and most importantly telling me that you love me every single day. You wouldn’t stop hugging me until I said it back because you knew how much I hated being touched. I promise I will make you so proud.”
