AG paddlers Zubin, Pooja pocket West Zone Table Tennis titles

Zubin Taraporewala of AG Mumbai stunned defending champion Mohit Verma of AG Jaipur 4-0 to emerge men's singles champion in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department West Zone Table Tennis tournament, organized by Accountant General Recreation Club Nagpur, which concluded at Robertson Hall, YMCA, here on Friday.

NAGPUR: Zubin Taraporewala of AG Mumbai stunned defending champion Mohit Verma of AG Jaipur 4-0 to emerge men's singles champion in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department West Zone Table Tennis tournament, organized by Accountant General Recreation Club Nagpur, which concluded at Robertson Hall, YMCA, here on Friday.
Pooja Sharma of AG Ahmedabad retained the women's singles crown defeating Vandana Singh of AG Gwalior 4-1, while Basab Chaudhary of AG Nagpur went down fighting to Bhopal's Santosh Khirwadkar 2-3 in the 39 plus category final.

Team championship winners AG Rajkot and runners-up AG Mumbai and all the finalists of individual events have qualified for the Inter Zonal tournament to be played at Chandigarh next month.
It was a one-sided affair in the men's singles final where Zubin of Mumbai outclassed Jaipur's Mohit Verma in straight games 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5. In the women's singles, Pooja Sharma of AG Ahmedabad came from behind with one game down to beat Vandana Singh of AG Gwalior 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6.
In the veterans 39 plus category, Santosh Khirwadkar of AG Bhopal got the better of Basab Chaudhary of Nagpur in a keenly fought contest to win 11-7,11-5, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9.
Sarjan Bhagat, IFS, principal chief conservator of forest, Maharashtra, distributed the prizes. Dinesh Patil, Accountant General (A&E), Jaydeep Shah, IAAS, principal director, regional training institute, Rajdeep Singh, AG (Audit), Vishal Chawre, deputy AG and Ram Andani, AGRC secretary, were the guests of honour.

Veteran 39 plus (Semifinals): Santosh Khirwadkar (Bhopal) bt Suyash Chaturvedi (Gwalior) 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-7); Basab Chaudhary (Nagpur) bt Sikandar Jam (Rajkot) 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-8).
Final: Santosh Khirwadkar (Bhopal) bt Basab Chaudhary (Nagpur) 3-2 (11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9).
Men's singles (Quarterfinals): Mohit Verma (Jaipur) bt Jagdish Makhwana (Mumbai) 4-2 (9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6); Sanjib Parvi (Jaipur) bt Manish Yadav (Goa) 4-0 (13-11, 11-9, 12-10, 13-11); Chintan Oza (Rajkot) bt Jalay Mehta 4-2 (4-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9); Zubin Taraporewala (Mumbai) bt A Santosh (Raipur) 4-2 (11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 1-11, 12-10, 11-6).
