There are some things in life that must be enjoyed at a leisurely pace and a good breakfast is on top of our list such things. For a lot of working city dwellers, a good breakfast is a luxury- what with early work timings and the rush to cover impossible distances each morning, to reach office on time. Yet, the city, with its numerous amazing breakfast joints scattered all over, gently keeps on reminding us, that a good breakfast is one of the greatest simple pleasures of life.

On days when you have nothing important to do and nowhere especially important to be, head over to one of the places mentioned below, to discover the pure joy of sipping coffee and gorging on the delicious first meal of the day.

  1. Yoga House

For the city’s health conscious, the Yoga House in Bandra West is the perfect place for a scrumptious, guilt-free breakfast. While you might find the names of dishes like  ‘I am toning’, ‘I am detoxifying’, laughable and a little off-putting, we assure you that the dishes themselves will not disappoint. Their poha is cooked in olive oil and has a generous helping of sprouts, giving the Maharashtrian beaten rice dish a refreshing twist. They also have ten grain toasts with a variety of toppings to choose from, like peanut butter and even an Ayurvedic Chyawanprash spread.

  2. Haji Ali Juice Center

Located at the entrance of one of the most popular Islamic shrines in the country, the place opens at 5 am and is open until a little after midnight. It serves the best juices in the city, besides ice-creams, faloodas, sandwiches, pizzas and a lot more. But it’s not just the regular stuff- they also have some pretty cool seasonal choices like the New Zealand grape juice/cherry/apple/kiwi or Blueberry juice. The ice-creams are all made of fresh fruits and the fresh cream bowls with fruit and dry fruit toppings are to die for. We highly recommend this place for people who prefer a fruit-filled, calorie laden breakfast. ALSO READ: 5 Places Every Delhiite Must Have Breakfast At!

  3. Cafe Madras

This is one of the best South Indian breakfast joints in the city, as is indicated by the fact that the place is jam packed with people, throughout the day. The service is quick and their perfectly crisp dosas and the idlis flavoured with home made butter, are unmatched. You can always see a queue outside the small restaurant, but the wait is no longer that 15 minutes, as the waiters ensure that there’s no dillydallying after the meal is over. Your bill will pleasantly surprise you, as the delicious meal you’ll have here will be unbelievably cheap.

Meal for 2: Rs 400 (or less)

  4. Dakshinayan

They have three joints- one in Walkeshwar, Malabar Hill, one in Juhu and another one in Tardeo. The restaurant is famous for its slightly Mumbai-fied version of South Indian food. Particularly well-known are the snacks like mini idlis and nachni dosai, while their Raagi and Rava masala dosas are incomparable. Although the prices here might not particularly delight some wallets, the taste will surely make up for it!

  5. Thambi

Well, if we’re doing South Indian food joints, it would be criminal to ignore this one. The Udupi cafe, which is located in five locations- Ghatkopar, Kurla, Matunga, Mulund and Chandivli- is just the place for an upma dripping with ghee. Also worth trying is their Mysore sada dosa and their Kanda Bhajiyas (fried onion snacks). The Bhajiya is perfectly cooked and with just the right amount of batter and is served with the perfect tangy chutney.

    Meal for 2: Rs 350

  6.  Kyani & Co

Any list of breakfast places in Mumbai is incomplete without the mention of the cities timeless Irani cafes and Kyanis enjoys a position right at the top. Light on the pocket and magical to the taste buds, the food at Kyani feels like coming home after a long day’s work. Khari biscuits with Irani chai, cheese scrambled eggs, and mawa cake, are the ultimate must-haves here.

A trip to any Irani cafe is not quite satisfactory without a taste of the Akuri on toast-  a spicy scrambled egg dish on toast, flavoured with fried onions, ginger,  coriander, chopped chilis, and black pepper. Jimmy’s boy’s Salli per edu- spicy eggs on fried potato straws- is particularly famous. Wash it down with a cup of Irani chai (like we needed to tell you), or with a strawberry smoothie, if you are feeling a bit low on sugar.

    Meal for 2: Rs 800

  8. Sassanian

    Bun maska and Irani tea

Our third favourite Irani cafe is also located in Marine Lines and offers a wide range of food options to choose from, besides Parsi dishes. The prices are crazy low and the food quite simple lip smacking. You can go for Fried Eggs Sunny Side Up and kheema bhurji, along with some creamy bun maska and tea. Their mawa cakes are quite popular and so are the custard and the lemon meringue pastry.

    Meal for 2: Rs 250

  9. Cafe Mondegar

Cafe Mondegar or Mondies, as its fondly called, is quite easily one of the most famous food stops in the city. The popularity of Mondegar stems from its kitschy decor, the walls paying tribute to the late cartoonist Mario Miranda and a blingy juke box, blasting songs which  are drowned in the din of conversations of the crowds. The meals here, are by no means cheap, but the food is nothing but delicious. You can have the masala omelettes with a pot of tea, or for the crunchy garlic toasts with chicken sausages. They also have something called the Mondy’s special- 2 eggs with 2 pieces of ham/sausage/bacon, 2 slices of butter/jam toasts and french fries, with fresh fruit juice of your choice/tea or coffee. Day made!

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,300

Located in Bandra reclamation, nestled in a quiet lane of popular bars and restaurants, Fat Man’s is all about comfort food, loaded with calories (and of course taste). This place has quite an elaborate Breakfast menu and has a wide range of options- from egg Florentine and omelettes to waffles and pancakes. They have something called the baked egg bowls, made up of runny egg yolks on a bed of creamed spinach and tomato sauce. It’s filling and extremely yummy.

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,500

  11. Theobroma

Although Theobroma is famous for their mean brownies, especially the millionaire brownies, very few know about the equally mean English breakfast that the place can whip up. Their Full English Breakfast- bacon, sausages, eggs and baked beans, served with toast and tea or coffee- is a visual and gastronomical delight. They also have the full range of egg varieties along with omelettes, pancakes and french toast, and everything is too delicious to give a pass on.

    Meal for 2: Rs 750

  12. Salt Water Cafe

One of South Mumbai’s crown jewels, the Salt Water cafe is a breakfast-lover’s delight. The cafe served breakfast all day and serves every breakfast food you can ever think of. Meal for 2: Rs 1,200

  13. Indigo Deli

The Indigo Deli has seven outlets in the entire city, which in itself is a certificate of great food. Breakfast here, doesn’t come cheap, but certainly does come with loads and loads of yummy love. Although breakfasting options are limited, they are available round-the-clock. You can go for any of the egg options, and stuff your omelettes with beans, bacon or even salmon, or you can eat healthy by choosing the interesting cous-cous upma.

    Meal for 2: Rs. 2,500

  14. Suzette’s Crepes

The French cafe’s buttery croissants are the stuff of legends amongst the authentic Bandra boys. The croissants are so delicious, they disappear from the menu before 9.30 am- way before most of Bandra wakes up! So ditch sleep and head up there to enjoy the warm goodness. You can choose from a variety of authentic and incredibly filling French crepes, which come in both sweet and savory kind. For breakfast, we recommend you order the Savoury Breakfast- 1 savoury crepe with egg and creamed spinach, or Egg and Mozarella and tomatoes, or Egg ratatouille and grilled chicken, along with organic tea, or espresso, or cappuccino.

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,900

  15. The Bagel Shop

One of the best all-day breakfast places in Mumbai, the Bagel Shop is popular with both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, but only the heavy spenders. Since, we’re talking breakfast, we recommend you go for the omelette bagel, with cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and an extra helping of bacon or pork/chicken sausages, for the carnivores.

    Meal for 2: Rs 950

  16. Prakash

A know a food joint is serving authentic Maharashtrian cuisine, when it’s located in Shivaji Park in Dadar and that too, close to the Shiv Sena Bhavan. Prakash Shakaahari Upahaar Kendra, is THE best place in the city for those craving a Maharashtrian breakfast. The place serves batata vadas, vada pavs, batata poha and much more. The batata vadas are especially good- perfectly crispy on the outside, with a moist potato bhaji filling, served with tangy coriander chutney.

    Meal for 2: Rs 300

Located at Pali Naka, Bandra, Cafe Basilico serves up one of the most prefect egg breakfasts in the city. Basilico’s Moroccon dish Egg Shakshouka is a must-have not just for its rarity, but also for the perfectly done poached eggs, lying on a bed of spicy sauce made from tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions, spiced with cumin and cayenne pepper powder. They also make one of the most delicious French toasts in the city.

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,550

  18. The Pantry

Located in the most culturally rich part of the city, the Pantry is one of the most favoured haunt of breakfast lovers in the city, partly because breakfast foods are available all day, and partly because the food is just so, so good. Their Breakfast burgul upma, almonds and raisins is an interesting take on the famous breakfast dish. Also for those wanting an uber spicy start to the day, the Naga chilli Mushroom omelette is the best choice. The dish is spiced with King Chilli, a.k.a the spiciest chilli in all of India. If you accidentally set your tongue on fire after eating this however, Pantry has you covered with their Double chocolate waffles, served with espresso whipped cream or flour waffles, with fresh fruits, vanilla custard and natural honey.

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,300

  19. Kala Ghoda Cafe

Located in a blink-and-you-miss-it lane in Kala Ghoda, Fort, this particular cafe is the cosiest one that there is. The waffles here are one of the best ones we’ve ever hand. Served with melted butter and maple syrup in small wooden bowls, the golden waffles are perfectly done- delightfully crunchy on the outside and fluffy, warm and soft on the inside. You can also opt for the wholesome Muesli bowl with fruit and yogurt, and try their signature Apple Beetroot Carrot juice.

    Meal for 2: Rs 850

  20. Jamjar Diner

Quirky decor, which probably belongs to a place that you might reach after falling down the rabbit hole, is what defines this otherwise quaint diner in Versova. JJ serves breakfast from 9 am to 4 pm and has a wide range of options to choose from. If you are feeling a little low on natural sugars, we recommend that you grab their superfood smoothie bowl, loaded with goodness of berries, banana, yogurt, granola, chia seeds and coconut. They also have the spicy jalapeno and queso waffles for those who like their waffles with a little twist.

    Meal for 2: Rs 1,500
