Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, next year, villagers at UP’s Bhatta and Parsaul stay confused on whether to vote for the local parties like Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP) and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) or the ruling party at the central government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While many support the initiative, taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to put ban on currency notes of the denomination Rs 500 an Rs 1,000, financial struggle still continues among the villagers. However, though the villager consider the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as their local parties, but they are also agitated by the land acquisition by the Mayawati ruled state government in Uttar Pradesh in 2011.

Local villagers also expressed their concern over the chances of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, in the upcoming assembly elections. While some voters in the area support the Congress leader for voicing the protest of the villagers as an youth leader in 2011, others doubt Gandhi for the failed 2012 campaign.

Even Congress leaders in the area, believes that BJP might be a strong party to beat in the next elections if the implementation of their new policy works smooth, but stays hopeful considering several days for the money flow in the market to regain normality, thereby intensifying public distress.

Over the implementation of the demonetisation policy by the Prime Minister, following which there had been a ban on currency notes of the denomination Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, villagers questioned the government’s initiative to introduce the Rs 2,000 notes and also the impact of the policy, citing that those with actual black money are converting their black cash into real estate or gold.
