MARGAO: Zico has given up on FC Goa’s chances of qualification and so has the rest of Goa but there is still a slight possibility that they might still just sneak through.
Goa’s chances, though, are negligible as calculations suggest last year’s finalists have only a 0.01 percent chance of making it to the Indian Super League (ISL) play-offs. The Goan franchise has just 11 points from 12 matches and are rooted to the bottom of the table and it will be a miracle if they can sail through.
For that to happen, Goa must win their remaining two matches by huge margins to bring goal difference into equation and other teams should mysteriously falter: Kerala Blasters shouldn’t add more than two points, FC Pune City should not win any of their two remaining matches and both NorthEast United FC and Chennaiyin FC should not add more than three points!
At least mathematically, it’s a possibility but you’d be foolish to believe that could happen, especially given how FC Goa have performed all season. No wonder Zico threw his hands up at the post-match press conference and simply said, “it’s all over.”
“I would like to apologize to the fans because they always supported us, stayed by our side. Even though we cannot be in the playoffs, we will continue to do our best in the two remaining games. Today was not what eliminated us, the elimination came since the start (with) the way we have been behaving,” Zico told reporters after his team was outplayed 2-1 by Atletico de Kolkata, a team Zico is yet to get the better of in eight matches.
“I told the players a team can win only if they are disciplined. I am really ashamed at our performance (today). We were so disorganized. We had time to win this game. I was ashamed to see the team play this way. Everyone wanted to be a hero. We could have won if everyone had played their role. I pitied Richarlyson (when) he was alone against three or four players during the counter attack (which led to the winner),” said the Brazil legend.
Atletico de Kolkata coach Jose Molina was pleased with his team’s performance and said this was the best they had played all through the season.
“I think if one team deserved to win it was Atletico de Kolkata. It’s true that the goal came in the last minute but we played really well. Brilliant first half. We only scored one goal but we could have scored two or three more goals in the first half,” said Molina.
