Improvement is being reported in gender ratio in the state. According to the census of 2011, the sex ratio was 877 females per 1000 males, whereas the child sex ratio was 830. The child sex ratio was recorded at 898 in the state between January and October.

According to Dr Vijay Garg, Director (Family Welfare) in the office of the Director General Health Services, Sirsa tops in sex ratio at birth (SRB) followed by Fatehabad (923), Panchkula (922), Hisar and Palwal (919 each). In the census of 2011, Sirsa had sex ratio of 896, Fatehabad (903), Panchkula (870), Hisar (871) and Palwal (879).

Officials believe stern implementation of the PC&PNDT Act and social awakening led to improvement in sex ratio in some districts of the state.

Kurukshetra, Narnaul and Rewari recorded poor sex ratio at 834, 835 and 865, respectively.

According to the census of 2011, Kurukshetra recorded sex ratio of 889, Narnaul 894 and Rewari 898.

Dr Vijay Garg said, “Most of the districts have shown marked improvement in the sex ratio.”

Kamla Singh, Director General of Health Services, said the department recently organised a workshop of civil surgeons for sterner implementation of the PC&PNDT Act.

She said during the workshop, the civil surgeons of various districts were informed about the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be followed during intra-district, inter-district and inter-state raids at ultrasound centres that conduct gender test.
