Champion Boxer Neeraj Goyat breaks into World Boxing Council rankings

Professional boxer Neeraj Goyat from India has broken into the latest rankings released by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Goyat is currently ranked 35th in the latest WBC list following his successful defence of the welterweight Asia Pacific title.

In the Asia Pacific title deciding meet, Goyat had to face the menacing Ben Kite. However, he retained his belt after out-punching his opponent. In a gruelling 12-round contest held at the Talkatora Stadium, the 24-year-old Indian prevailed over the Australian 120-110 119-109 115-113.

It was reported earlier that Goyat harboured dreams about breaking into the WBC rankings and mentioned how defending his title would help him do that. Now, the dream has indeed been realised.

As reported by the PTI, Goyat was extremely proud of his achievement and spoke about his future ambitions. He said his next aim was to win a WBC international title.

"It's a huge achievement for me to break into the top-35 of WBC rankings, which has had world champions like Floyd Mayweather among others. I am the first Indian boxer to break into these rankings and I am very happy about it. My next target is to win a WBC international title which would propel me into the top-15 of the rankings," the boxer said.

The ultimate goal of the boxer is to challenge for the world title and once he breaks into the top-15 in the world he would be in contention to challenge for the world title. However, he intends to take one step at a time and keep his feet on the ground.

Goyat added, "That is my ultimate goal, to win the world title but it is one step at a time. So I am taking things as they come."

British star boxer Amir Khan, who holds the silver belt at the moment, is the top ranked boxer in the WBC welterweight rankings.
