323km/h, 800m top end runs.... It's time for Saldanha Drags 2016

Cape Town - Think Race Wars in the Fast and Furious series where Lettie races Dom's Dodge Charger against the Audi R8... Saldanha Drags 2016 is revving up to crown a new 800m king!

Saldanha Drags might not see racers driving for pink slips like in the 'Fast and Furious' movies, but it's SA's version of organised top end runs and with a turnout of thousands, its success is long-standing, and the thrills are even more exciting.

If you’re a petrolhead in Cape Town, the Saldanha 800m Top End Drag event is definitely one of the most important events on the motorsport calendar.

Bragging rights

The weekend November 25-26 will see the event run for the 11th year, and in recent years there was a marked improvement in not just the organization, but the quality of the event  too, which is hosted at the Saldanha Airfield.

For 2016 the organisers, West Coast Racing, assisted by a few big name local sponsors, are pulling out all the stops to make this the most entertaining and memorable event yet. To add to the excitement, Monster Energy is once again on board and this year they will be bringing along some extra entertainment for the fans and kids.

With Top End racing fast becoming one of the premium forms of motorsport in the country, and with a growing perception that it is “chequebook” racing, the organisers have classes set up to cater for everyone, whether you drive a mildly modified aspirated Citi Golf, or an Italian supercar.

With all the competitive banter and quips between drivers, you can look forward to seeing who will get bragging rights between the die-hard Honda guys, the huge Nissan VVL fraternity and the top end racing powerhouses.

Gates open at 5pm on Friday, November 25 and the evening sees Outlaw style heads-up racing over the quartermile (400m), which is very popular among street racers as well as fans. A huge “race party” will also be happening in the marquee.

The 800m Top End assault starts at 9am on the morning of the 26th, and this year particularly, the field of entries are diverse. Although great emphasis was put into making this event one for regular street racers to bring their daily rides to a longer stretch than just the 400m, there are a number of big names participating.

With the recent successes of Cape Town cars at the top end events in Johannesburg, the Cape motoring community will be amped to see a few of Cape Town’s fastest cars on home soil. They will have their work cut out for them though, as there is a large contingent of cars from all over the country which will descend on the fishing town on the West Coast. These include quite a few of the fastest cars Joburg has to offer, all aiming to improve their speeds at the coast.

The weekend promises to be an epic one, best get your tickets at Computicket, on sale now. Weekend tickets are only R100, with kids under 12 paying only R30, and children under the age of 6 get in for free.
