SHIVAMOGGA: Two debt-ridden farmers have committed
suicide in the district in a span of 48 hours.
Manjunath,45, a
farmer of
Gejjenhalli village in Shivamogga taluk committed suicide by hanging from a tree in his field on Sunday night.
Police said he was finding it difficult to repay the Rs 2 lakh loan he had takne from a cooperative society and private lenders. The maize crop in his two acres of land had withered completely due to the failure of monsoon.
In another incident, Gante Bangarappa,50, a farmer of Kummur committed, committed suicide by consuming poison on Monday. Police said Bangarappa also took this extreme step due to crop failure. He had reportedly borrowed Rs 3 lakh from banks and private persons and was planning to repay it after this harvest season.
