Jewellery shop raid turns up almost Rs 59 lakhs
Nearly Rs 59 lakhs was recovered after police raided a jewellery shop in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, on Tuesday night. Bags of demonetised notes, amounting to Rs 58,99,500, were handed over to the Income Tax department, along with the jeweller’s records.

Senior police inspector Ashok Naik said they had received an anonymous tipoff that RJ Jewellers had cash stashed in the shop. “We were given the name and address of the jeweller. It is not in our power to seize the money but the IT department is in the process of checking whether it is black,” he said. The IT department has taken over the raid and officials refused to comment, stating that it is too early to do so. Shop owner Ruchit Tamka, who owns two other jewellery shops in Navi Mumbai was unavailable for comment, despite repeated attempts. He has since asserted that the money was legal but was unable to explain why he’d stored such a large amount in the shop.
