Betul: A temple in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district is offering to help marry young men and women from poor families, who have been unable to arrange money following demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1000 notes, get married.

The Shri Rukmani Balaji temple, founded by NRI entrepreneur Sheonarayan 'Sam' Verma, is offering the service to couples whose marriages were fixed the demonetisation announcement on November 8.

"We realised the problems parents, especially from the financially weaker background, are facing and have offered to arrange marriages for their wards for free," temple coordinator Sunil Dwivedi told News18 over telephone.

The temple also has a list of people who wish to perform kanyadan and well-off people who have come forward offering gifts for the couples. The temple will also invite dignitaries to attend such marriages.

"The bride and groom can come with their families empty-handed and we will ensure everything," Dwivedi said.

Well-off families in dire need of liquidity ahead of marriages can also come to the temple as the trust offered to make arrangements in lieu of post dated cheques. "We will ask them to vow repayment before the deity and we believe on one will lie in God's abode," Dwivedi said.

Spread over 10.5-acres in Balajipuram, the temple houses idols of Lord Balaji, Radha with Krishna and Lord Shiva as its presiding deities. The complex also has temples for other deities like Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Shani and Navagrahas.

"Demonetisation is a laudable step from PM Narendra Modi as this will dismantle black money and break the backbone of terrorism and naxalism in the country," a communiqué quoted Verma said.

The RBI has allowed people with marriages in the family to withdraw up to Rs 2.5 lakh in cash but the conditions tagged to this waiver are making things hard for such families.
