Family of 5 loses everything in fire days before Thanksgiving

Fire may have been started by maintenance crew

This Thanksgiving will be a very difficult one for a Nashua mother of five whose family lost everything in a house fire over the weekend. “It’s a total loss for me and my children. We have nothing now,” Nichole Jones said. A fire broke out at Jones’ home on 11th Street in Nashua Saturday afternoon. No one was home at the time because the housing complex was working on the plumbing. Jones’ frustration was compounded by the possibility that the maintenance crew may have sparked the blaze. “The torch from the pipe -- to the pipe -- is what set the fire and it burned in the wall for hours before it actually reached the attic,” Jones said. Now the home that she shared with her children -- who range in age from 2 to 19 -- is gone, along with nearly everything they owned. “Everything is gone. Everything. Kids’ clothes, dressers, beds. Everything is gone,” she said. The family had no renter's insurance, and her children are traumatized. One of her children broke down at school after another student pointed out that he had nothing. “The kid said something to him about him losing his belongings, and he took it hard and we had to go get him,” Jones said. While Jones said she is thankful her family is safe this holiday season, she said she’s frustrated that a fire sparked by someone else has left her family's life in pieces. “I don't know if it hurts more because I didn't start it,” Jones said. “Like if it had been my fault, I don't know if I could have eaten it like you're just dumb and you did it and it's your fault. It's not my fault -- at all.” Jones said she is looking into pursuing legal action. A GoFundMe page has been set up in the family's name.
