The Broncos waived safety Ryan Murphy from the practice squad Tuesday and plan to re-sign cornerback Taurean Nixon in his place.

Nixon, a seventh-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2015, was waived Monday to clear a roster spot for receiver Marlon Browns. Nixon was on the practice squad for his first regular season in the league. He was promoted to the active roster Nov. 6, when the Broncos played the Raiders in Oakland without Aqib Talib (back) or Kayvon Webster (hamstring).

Hillman claimed. Ronnie Hillman is going back to Cali. The San Diego State alum and former Broncos running back was claimed by the Chargers off waivers from Minnesota on Tuesday. The Broncos also put a claim on Hillman, but because San Diego has a worse record (4-6), it won.

Hillman was drafted by Denver in the third round of the 2012 draft and was its leading rusher last season, with 863 yards and seven touchdowns. He was released in September as the Broncos pared their training camp roster to its final 53.

The Vikings, who rank last in the league with only 70 rushing yards per game, signed Hillman nearly two weeks later, but in five games, he totaled only 18 carries and 50 yards.

San Diego currently sits at No. 18 in the league with 103 rushing yards per game, led by Melvin Gordon (83.8 per game)
