Accra, Nov. 22, GNA - Rohan Karamchandani a student of Ghana International School (GIS) won gold in the just ended 2016 Junior Chess Challenge organized by the Mentors Chess Academy under the auspices of the Ghana Chess Association.

The competition, which was held at the GIS in Accra, saw Karamchandani beating off stiff competition from Addotey Addo from Alpha Beta School and Naren Varyani also from GIS, who won the Silver and Bronze medals respectively.

The 5-round Swiss tournament attracted over 80 participants from International Community School, Christ the King, Ghana International School, Soul Clinic International School and St. Charbel International School.

The rest are Morning Star School, Mary Mother of Good Council School, Al-Rayan International School, Queens International School, German-Swiss International, God's Home, Great Stars School and the hosts Ghana International School.

In the U14 category, a pupil of Alpha Beta School, Joseph Sovereign, came first ahead of Shiv Brar from Al-Rayan International School and Van Sneh from the Royan Ridge School, whilst Rohan Sharma won gold in the U-11 division with Nana Kwame Boachie, a pupil of International Community School and Robin Hammerslag from German - Swiss International School following in that order.

The winners received trophies, medals and some books from Vidya books.

The Director of Mentors Chess Academy David Acheampong, in an interview with the GNA Sports said he was happy with the level of play of the children and stressed that Chess is an excellent game that improves the memory, concentration; logical and critical thinking skills of an individual.
