Dehradun, November 22

Sacked workers of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) staged Chetna rally here today. They have been demanding their reinstatement and job regularisation.

The protesters, under the banner of Uttarakhand MNREGA Contractual Employees’ Union, gathered at the Raipur bus stand. The rally passed through several roads of the city.

The police placed barricades on Subhash road to stop them as the protesters were heading towards the Secretariat. The protesters had an argument with police personnel, and they sat on a dharna on the Subhash road. They said the government didn’t nothing to fulfil their demands.

Sundermani Semwal, state president of the Uttarakhand MNREGA Contractual Employees’ Union, said the association had been protesting for one year, but the government didn’t listened to them.

The rally resulted in a traffic jam on Subhash road, Kanak Chowk, Ashley Hall, Clock Tower, Rajpur road and EC road.

Dwarka Prasad Devli, Rajendra Prasad Nautiyal, Ramesh, Seema, Parvati, Rajendra Singh and Pawan Kumar participated in the protest.
