The Sirmaur police confiscated a leopard hide from a 33-year old youth, Lal Singh, at Timbi village in Shillai last evening.
Superintendent of Police Souyma Samabsivan said the police received a tip-off that the youth was carrying cannabis, but on search a leopard hide and 71-gm cannabis were recovered from his bag.
She said the leopard hide was professionally removed and treated with chemicals to get rid of the malodor it usually possessed. It appeared to be the work of a habitual offender, she said.
The police team acted as decoy customers and managed to entice Lal Singh to sell the hide for Rs 1 lakh. He was found waiting at the Timbi bus stand for a suitable customer.
The SP said the hide cost several lakhs in the international market and they were on the lookout for such offenders in places like Churdhar and Shillai.
A case under the Wildlife Protection Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against Lal Singh. Investigation is under way to trace the miscreants involved in the crime.
