PUNE: A 31-year-old chartered accountant was severely beaten up by two unidentified men following a heated argument outside an ATM kiosk in Tingrenagar in Vishrantwadi in the early hours of Monday. The incident happened when they had lined up to withdraw money.
Ashuraj Ghateshahi, a resident of Vishrantwadi, has lodged a complaint with the Vishrantwadi police station. “The duo fled the spot when Ghateshahi’s friends got there to withdraw money,” said R T Darawade, assistant inspector.
He said that the police have launched a manhunt.
“We have sought CCTV footage of the kiosk from the bank. We will soon arrest them,” Darawade said.
Darawade said that the incident happened around 1.30am on Monday, outside the kiosk of the private bank. Ghateshahi, on his way home, noticed a queue outside the kiosk. “He too stood in queue,” Darawade said, “Ghateshahi even told his friends about availability of cash at the ATM.”
The machine had a technical glitch, and was dispensing cash slowly. “Ghateshahi had four debit cards, including one belonging to his wife,” Darawade said.
Ghateshahi tried withdrawing money using two of his cards, but he was unsuccessful. He made way for the person behind him to withdraw cash. “When that person too was not able to withdraw cash, he started verbally abusing Ghateshahi and left the kiosk,” Darawade said.
Within minutes, he returned with his friend. The duo dragged Ghateshahi outside and started pummelling him. They also whipped him using a belt. “Around the same time, Ghateshahi’s friends reached the spot. That was when the duo fled,” Darawade said.
