#CopyThat: Tomboy Topknot

Cornrows and topknots made a huge splash on Dior’s Spring 2017 runway. This intricate hairstyle made for a stunning contrast with designer Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first collection for the fashion house, which was filled with whimsical whites, quilted cropped jackets, and tulle skirts. Redken global creative director Guido Palau (the mastermind behind this look) told Vogue, “Though the references are tomboyish in a way, it still has a very feminine side that’s quite pulled together in its simplicity.”

Inspired by this feminine-meets-masculine ‘do, we tapped Kérastase consulting hairstylist Matt Fugate to show us how to recreate it in our own way. No judgment here if you need a little help. Tap a friend to lend a hand with this textured topknot, and be sure to return the favor!

Step-by-step instructions

1. Section off hair into three parts and clip aside the front.

2. Mist back with Kérastase Elixier Ultime hair oil mist. This spray will add shine and enhance strength before braiding.

3. Tilt head forward and part hair to create cornrow.

4. Braid from the nape of the neck towards the middle of head and secure with a clear snag-free elastic. Repeat until you have four cornrows at the back.

5. Gather all four braids into one high ponytail and fold into a vertical loop. Wrap ends of hair around elastic holder and secure with bobby pins.

6. Spritz the topknot with hair oil.

7. Unclip front sections and brush and smooth towards the topknot.

8. Wrap each side around the loop and pin down, leaving a few ends out for contrast.

9. Set the hairstyle with a few spritzes of hair oil.
