U.P. and the War.



AT  a Provincial Durbar held at Allahabad on Monday, Sir James Meston pointed out what the U.P. had done to help the war with men, money and materials. They had supplied nearly 25,000 men who have enlisted and from public services no less than 270 men have left for military employment. More than Rs. 16 ½ lakhs were contributed to the Imperial Indian Relief Fund Rs. 31 ½ lakhs were collected for the Special War Fund besides 160 motor ambulances and 10 launches being purchased and endowed. Referring to manufactures of war materials Sir James stated that for military reasons details could not be disclosed, but he said that the amount of cotton cloth manufactured at Cawnpore into tents, bedding, etc., would form a web 8,000 miles long, while a web of the woollen cloth would be 7,000 miles long.
