GNDU cyclists set new records in c’ship

Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) organised All-India Inter-University Track Cycling (men and women) Championships 2016-17 from November 16 to 19.

Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) organised All-India Inter-University Track Cycling (men and women) Championships 2016-17 from November 16 to 19. More than 33 university teams (men and women), comprising 250 cyclists, from all over the country took part in the championship. As many as 15 international cyclists participated in the event. The closing ceremony function was held at Guru Nanak Auditorium on the university campus. Prof Ajaib Singh Brar, Vice-Chancellor, GNDU, gave away medals and trophies to position holders. Arjuna Awardee sportsperson, Amar Singh, was the guest of honour on the occasion. GNDU cycling (men) team emerged overall champion with 52 points, Panjabi University, Patiala, was the overall runners-up with 30 points and Punjab University, Chandigarh, came overall third with 13 points. GNDU cycling (men) team won five gold, five silver and one bronze medal. GNDU cycling (women) team was declared overall champion with 52 points. University of Kerala was overall runners-up with 19 points and Panjab University, Chandigarh, was overall third with eight points. GNDU cycling (women) team won six gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Overall six new records — three in men and three in women sections — were created during the championship. In men’s section Manjeet Singh of GNDU created new record in 1 km time trial with timing of 1:10.137 ms. The old record was 1.10.200 ms. In 1 km sprint, Manjeet Singh of the GNDU created new record with timing 11.726 ms, breaking the old record of 11:752 ms. In Olympic Team Sprint, new record was created with timing of 1.08.210ms by the team of three cyclists of the GNDU, whose members were Manjeet Singh, Ranjit Singh, Abhijith US. The old record was 1.09.316ms. In women’s section Kezia Vargheese of the GNDU created new record in 500 metre (time trial) by covering the distance in 38.141 ms. The old record was 39.490 ms. Amritha Reghunmath G of University of Kerala created new record in 3 km (individual pursuit) with timing of 4.19.300 ms. The old record was 4.27.034 ms. In 1500 metre (team time trial), new record was created with timing of 2.00.513 ms by the team of four cyclists of the GNDU, which included Deshmukh Komal Ajay, Kezia Vargheese, Sayona PO and Rajbir Kaur. The old record was 2.01.315 ms.

Children’s Day celebration

Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School hosted a function under the aegis of Amritsar Sahodaya Schools Complex to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru. As many as 85 students along with their mentors and parents participated in the function. Dr Dharam Veer Singh, president, Sahodaya Schools Complex, extended a warm welcome to the chief guest, Dr Jagroop Singh Sekhon, controller exams, GNDU, Amritsar, and the guest of honour, Dr Manjit Singh, deputy director, CBSE. The programme commenced with seeking blessings of the Almighty by rendition of the school shabad “Deh Shiva Var Mohe” followed by ceremonial lighting of lamp by Charanjit Singh Chadha, president, Chief Khalsa Diwan, and Harminder Singh, member, in charge Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School. A scintillating welcome dance was presented by students of the primary section. Dr Dharam Veer Singh said parents and teachers played a vital role in career development of a child. He congratulated students on the occasion of Children’s Day. A mesmerising guitar performance left the audience spellbound. The cherry on the cake was the foot tapping giddha presented by girls of Class IX and X. They set the stage on fire with vibrant display of sparkling dupattas. Dr Sekhon briefed students on Pt Nehru’s life, his achievements and encouraged them to imbibe his principles. He said today’s children were the stakeholders of tomorrow so they should be trained as responsible stewards of dream India. As many as 85 students from different CBSE schools were honoured on the occasion for their meritorious achievements. Charanjit Singh Chadha congratulated students, who were felicitated on the occasion and motivated them to keep striving for higher achievements. Dr Neera Sharma, secretary, Sahodaya Schools Complex, extended a vote of thanks to guests. The programme was attended by Anita Bhalla, Sarvjit Brar, Ripudaman, Harjit Kaur, Nidhi Mehra, Sunil Mehra, Sonia Singh, Gurpreet Oberoi, Paramjeet Kaur, Nageen Singh Bal, Manjit Kaur, Harjinder Kaur, Raman Dua, headmistress of GT Road branch of the school, Renu Ahuja, Nischint Kaur, supervisors Amritpal Kaur, Ravinder Narula, besides parents, teachers and students. — TNS
