Talk about stardom and in Malayalam it is Pulimurugan's reign. The film has smashed every other record and also ploughed through the prospects of other films. While the new-gen lollypop flick for teenagers Anandam has tried to stand up against it, the roar of the tiger - despite all its misconceived notes and terrible messages - continues to play loud. Pulimurugan, everyone seems to agree, has been a true triumph of stardom. No other actor than Mohanlal could have pulled off the film in Malayalam, and that is why his fans have not been taking any negative criticism lightly.
The merits and demerits of the film are now beyond the scope of discussion because Pulimurugan's interest is so high that, even to this week, theatres in Kerala play the film to full houses. Mohanlal, while delighted at the success of the film, has gone about business as usual. He is now reprising the role of Major Mahadevan Thampi for the fourth instalment of the Keerthichakra series by director Major Ravi. Titled 1971: Beyond Borders, the film is based on the Indo-Pak war of the 70s, and will reportedly see Mohanlal play three roles - as Major Mahadevan, his father Sahadevan, and one more, which is currently being kept a secret.
This year has been defining for Mohanlal. In addition to back-to-back hits in Malayalam, he also gained a strong fan following in Telugu cinema with two successful movies. The actor has now committed his second film in Kannada, which is titled Kanneshwara. He will act with Upendra in the film to be directed by Naganna. Billed to be a thriller, it is Mohanlal's second Kannada film having earlier acted in Mythri, a social drama.
