IISc prof among six to win Infosys Prize

Professor V Kumaran of the department of chemical engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, was among the six winners of the coveted Infosys Prize 2016 announced by the Infosys Science Foundation here on Friday.

BENGALURU: Professor V Kumaran of the department of chemical engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, was among the six winners of the coveted Infosys Prize 2016 announced by the Infosys Science Foundation here on Friday. Kumaran, who bagged the prize in the Engineering & Computer Science category , was honoured for his contributions in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary health.
Prof Sunil Amrith (Humanities), Dr Gagandeep Kang (Life Sciences), Prof Akshay Venkatesh (Mathematical Sciences), Dr Anil Bharadwaj (Physical Scien ces) and Prof Kaivan Munshi (Social Sciences) were the other winners.

The six will receive cash prize of Rs 65 lakh each, a 22 karat gold medallion and a citation certificate. Royal Society and Nobel laureate, will felicitate them on January 7 in Bengaluru. Foundation president SD Shibulal said this year saw the highest number of 252 nominations, of which six were declared winners by Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy . Chairing the jury for the six categories were eminent scientists and professors in Prof Venkatraman Ramak rishnan, president of the cluding Prof Pradeep K Khosla, University of California San Diego (Engineering & Computer Science); Prof Amartya Sen, Harvard University (Humanities); Dr Inder Verma, Salk Institute of Biological Sciences (Life Sciences); Prof Shrinivas Kulkarni, California Institute of Technology, (Physical Sciences); Prof Srinivasa SR Varadhan, New York University (Mathematical Sciences) and Prof Kaushik Basu, Cornell University (Social Sciences).
