KALYAN: Unidentified persons broke into a bank in an isolated area on Kalyan-Taloja Road during the wee hours on Thursday, but could not steal anything as they could not open the locker. However, they damaged the electrical wiring forcing the bank to stay shut for the day, inconveniencing hundreds of local villagers who are already facing a cash crunch owing to demonetisation.

Hill Line police were shocked to learn that Canara Bank had not appointed a security guard at its Pali branch, which was opened last month.
“As the bank is located in an isolated area and there were no guards, the thieves broke the grille on the back door and entered the premises,” said Sunil Bharadwaj, Thane deputy commissioner of police (zone 4).
Police are trying to recover the CCTV footage to get leads on the identity of the accused.
A staffer said the bank was closed for a day to fix the wiring for the CCTV cameras and server connection.
